How does the stock market work in the simplest terms?

It’s like an ebay for “fractional ownership” (shares) in well know companies. In the US markets, buyers/sellers exchange billions of dollars worth of “shares” on a daily basis. Buyers and sellers put in the order to buy shares of companies they want to own and sellers put in orders to sell shares of companies they already own.
